Carolinas Kiwanis District - Division 1 Newsletter
February 2008The committee is intended to:
The Kiwanis Carolinas District meeting at the Kingston Plantation Embassy Suites on February, 1 and 2, was a rousing success! Gov. Howard Kline and his staff (his wife Ann, who is also a member of the Waynesville Club, and Leah Moretz,) did a superb job of scheduling, presenting and making sure the meeting was not only successful but gave us some thoughts to take home to our clubs. The Embassy Suites was really a good place to have the conference and I can recommend it as a place to stay in North Myrtle Beach.
Several of our Clubs were represented by members from Asheville, Franklin, North Buncombe, and Waynesville. A special treat was our Kiwanis International President Dave Curry and his wife Eva attending the conference. Dave spoke at the Governor’s luncheon and at a meeting regarding the proposed new Carolinas District Board restructuring.
The current board is too large with 32 members, while the new proposed board will be composed of 9 elected Trustees. This new smaller board of trustees would replace the current Executive Advisory Committee. There would be no additional costs involved since there would be a smaller number of participants, and travel would be less of an expense. The trustees would meet four times a year, and would be composed of three members elected from nine regions– three in Eastern NC, three in Western NC and three from SC. The trustees would serve three years and eventually have a rotation so there would always be a continuum of experienced leadership.
Streamline Board Meetings through policy recommendations; The plan does not replace the Lt Governor position but does provide assistance and mentoring in order to better serve each division.
Help the Governor and Secretary with fiduciary decisions and
make recommendations;
Assist and mentor the current Lt Governors within their respective
Divisions; and,
Assist in strategic planning.
Kiwanis International President Curry sat in on the presentation and was quick to say that this plan was the best, most well thought out of any he had seen. The plan will be presented at the Conference in August, 2008, and the election of delegates will occur, if passed by a 2/3rds vote, at the district convention in 2009.
Growth is always an issue. Clear Channel is running a commercial and will continue to do so through March on their stations, Star 104.3, WWNC, and 880 Revolution, mentioning Kiwanis and the Health Adventure project. For those clubs within the listening area of these three stations we could coordinate a membership drive throughout our division. One tip from Stephanie Phillips, Lt Gov, division 24, is to develop an elevator speech that tells a person what Kiwanis is about in a memorable and sincere manner. Incorporate stories about what we do and paint a vivid, alive word picture of our mission. Take some time and write out your elevator speech, share it with your table mates at your meeting, practice, and be sure to invite the person you try it on to be your guest the next meeting. Another tip is to write a letter to businesses in your area and make a call then a personal visit to invite that person to a meeting. Barbara Beidenback, of the Asheville Club, has already written an effective letter and we will be glad to share it with you on request. Another idea from the Franklin Club that was very successful last year was to have the members who are in the real estate business get a list of new arrivals in the area each month then assign members to contact them as prospects. Our story is a good one and needs to be told!
We will be having a regional Division 1,2, and 3 meeting on March 29th at the Health Adventure starting on Saturday morning, 9:00 AM registration with an opening session at 9:30, lunch break at 12:00 (lunch will be brought in,) with a wrap up session at 1:30, and concluding on or before 2:00PM. We are the host Division so it will be important to have a good showing.
West Asheville will be having a Country Breakfast on either April 5th or April 19th, to support their little league ball team. Firm date to be determined. If you have never attended one of their Country Breakfasts you will be in for a treat if you go. West Asheville needs our help and support so plan to attend and when you do identify yourself and your club.

January 2008
Karon and I attended the Tuesday meeting at the Kiwanis Club of Franklin last week. We were really impressed with the vitality, vision and determination of the club to make a positive impact in the Franklin area. One of the reasons we traveled to see them was the surprise presentation of a silver David Burnette medal to Bob Trafford. Bob is a former Lt Gov and a Kiwanian for 48 years was duly surprised, shocked, and delighted as was his wife Mary who accompanied him at the meeting. Kim Angel has been doing a great job as President!
The Franklin Club will be having a pancake breakfast on February, 9th. Call Skip or Patty Howells for tickets if you can make it, 371-1635.
In addition to the medal presented to Bob, we inducted three new members into the Club binging them to 34 members. Wow! This is an all time high membership level. One of the reasons for their success is a growing awareness in the community of the activities. For example they sponsor five, yes five, Terrific Kids programs and a Key Club at Early College High School.
By the way, in order to highlight Gov Kline’s objective of GROWTH, Karon and I will be eager to come to your club to induct new members and to recognize those who are making a contribution to the Kiwanis Amphitheater honoring our friend David Burnette. Watch for the next Carolina Kiwanian as a news story recognizing Black Mountain’s, Dan Reilly, President receiving that Club’s first David Burnette medal.
Bib Miles from the Waynesville Club reports that the Big Brothers Big Sisters major fundraiser, Bowling For Kids Sake, be held on February 23. It will be held at Star Lanes in Asheville, TarHeel Lanes in Hendersonville, Mimosa Lanes in Morganton and Thunder Lanes in Sylva. Bob is encouraging each club in our Division to sponsor at least one team. It is an opportunity to have fun with fellow Kiwanians and help support a very valuable mentoring program.
Bob says he feels certain that the Big Brothers Big Sisters branch in your area would be more than willing to be a program at a Kiwanis Club meeting and tell the Big Brothers Big Sisters story plus provide information regarding Bowling For Kids Sake. The following are the contacts for each branch:

The Asheville Club has recently been recognized for it’s annual chess tournament called “Pawndemonium.” There was a nice story in the Asheville Citizen Times about the program.
Ned Cabiness, last year’s club president and long time chair of the program reported that 125 kids participated. A new record!
Don’t forget the district meeting on February 1st and 2nd in Mrytle Beach!
